Dear PaperBackSwap members,

A simple thing like your unused Book Credits can make all the difference in a child's life. At PaperBackSwap, we believe in both the power of reading and the power of giving. For each Book Credit you donate, PaperBackSwap and our supporting organizations will provide a new book for a school. PBS Money will help defray the cost of shipping the books.  Your donations mean that the school(s) you choose will be getting the books they need for classrooms, libraries and for the kids to have as their very own! If you know of an elementary school in need, suggest it here.

This holiday season, let's come together to help educate and support children in need all over our great country.
Thanks for joining us in making a real difference in the education of these kids!

Kinoshita School is a Title One public elementary school in San Juan Capistrano. It is part of the Capistrano Unified School District, the 9th largest district in California and the 77th largest in the U.S. The school is named for the Kinoshita family, who, from the time the family members were released from Heart Mountain Relocation Camp until the 1990s, farmed the land on which the school was built.

Kinoshita is located in south Orange County, which is generally considered to be a very affluent part of California. What most don't realize is that this prosperous region also contains significant pockets of poverty, and especially young families living in poverty. Local residents are surprised to learn that Kinoshita's student population is 99.4% Latino and 98.9% socioeconomically disadvantaged. English learners comprise 95.7% of the student body.

I started volunteering at Kinoshita five years ago when I learned that many of the volunteers at the school were from outside of our community. I thought, "Hey, our own city needs to be supporting our community's children!" After about a year and a half helping in classrooms I realized that the program could be much larger if someone were actually managing and helping it grow, so I volunteered to be the volunteer coordinator. It's an unpaid job, of course, which is what I want but some weeks I think I put in more time than some of the school's full time employees! Today there are 70 people from the community who volunteer in Kinoshita's classrooms each week.

In areas where poverty is well recognized by the surrounding communities, many support organizations generally come into existence. While San Juan Capistrano does have some such organizations, in general the low-income families of our community are not as well supported by private or public relief organizations as they would be in areas where their existence was more fully acknowledged.

Because students from non-English speaking families tend to lose literacy over the Summer, several years ago Kinoshita began a free Friday reading program in our library during the Summer. For Accelerated Reader Fridays, one community volunteer is paired with one Kinoshita student for an hour, and the student selects a library book to read aloud to their volunteer. We've found this program to be successful not only in helping retain students' literacy, but also in promoting a lifelong love of books and reading.

I am the (unpaid) volunteer coordinator for this K-5 school. I regularly get emails from volunteers who thank me profusely for providing this opportunity for them. What I do is not only helpful to the students and the teachers, but it's also a blessing to the volunteers themselves. Many of our volunteers have been at the school several years and have watched our students change, grow, and go on to be successful. It's simply a win-win for everyone concerned.

Most families do not have money for books for their children. The students, however, are eager readers and check out books from the library every week. In fact, the library use at Kinoshita is one of the highest in our area. Books are prized possessions for our students and we are always looking for ways to put more books in their hands!

Kinoshita would be honored and grateful to receive a donation of books from the PBS Books for Schools Program.

Travis Elementary School has been promoting children's literacy in exciting ways. Travis uses a Balanced Literacy approach to teach students to read and write. We require our students to read in class daily and encourage them to read at home as well. Teachers send home library books as well as leveled books for students to read. We have been rewarding students who make their reading goals by taking them to various performances put on by our local high schools.

Reading Recovery has been implemented to assist students who struggle with reading in1st grade. Our Bilingual program works to make students bi-literate in both English and Spanish.

Travis is a located in Rosenberg, Texas which is a suburb of Houston. We currently have 683 students in grades K-5. We are a Title I school with around 75% of our students on the federal lunch program.

With your generous donation, we can help our teachers build their classroom libraries with bright and exciting new books. These books will help our teachers reach our goal of making all of our students passionate readers.
We appreciate your consideration,

Kevin Winter, Principal

Shadow Oaks Elementary School serves k-2nd grade children PLUS all of the district's autistic Children (of these 3 grades). We are the largest school district in Mississippi, and of course all of the public schools are poor, their library budgets sparse. Our school is a Title 1 school with 85% of our students receiving free and or reduced lunch.

Since the budget no longer allows the librarian to have an assistant, I volunteer at this elementary school. Our librarian has a wonderful, positive attitude for teaching and for the books in her library,I've been helping her and I donated my paperbackswap credits to her, and I ordered books with my credits for their very needy library, and I listed more of my books onto my bookshelf to swap for them.

Thanks for considering Shadow Oaks Elementary School!

Mars Estates Elementary school is located in Essex, MD. We are a Baltimore County Public School with Title 1 status. Our school population is about 437. We have students from preschool 3’s to 5th Grade.

Our school also houses students with special needs. Our school has a gifted and talented track along with special education classes. We have an ESOL teacher once a week to work with our students who are still learning English as their second language.

Programs we offer include band, chorus, bully busters, safety patrol, fit Friday, after school math program, and announcement crew. We have an active PTA with many staff members on PTA. Most of our staff has been at the school for years. The staff truly cares about the students and wants what is best for them.

Most of our students walk to school as we are located within the neighborhood. We have a wellness center housed inside our building to help get our students be seen, if needed, by a medical professional. Our principal is very involved with the students and can be seen going around the classrooms and giving the students a message on the announcements daily. Our students get free breakfast every day and over 80% get free or reduced lunch.

We continue to work on getting our test scores up in reading. We are using a new reading curriculum this year while continuing to implement a modified 100 book challenge. All students have self-selected reading time with books at their level. The students also have library once a week to check out books. Our students love books. They are always looking for something new and exciting to read. They are expected to read daily at home with their parents filling out their reading log.

Our vision for our school is:
Mars Estates Elementary School will create a culture of deliberate excellence in our school and community by developing 21st century lifelong learners who possess skills that are necessary to be productive global citizens.

Our purpose is:
Mars Estates Elementary School will provide for every student the highest quality, 21st century education in a safe, secure, and positive environment conducive to high levels of teaching, learning, and student engagement, resulting in globally competitive students prepared for their chosen college and/or career path.

This school is in a suburb of Oklahoma City and the surrounding neighborhood has very limited income.

Epperly Heights Elementary is part of the Mid-Del Public Schools and serves 675 students in grades prekindergarten through fifth grade. The student body is served by a principal, vice-principal, 26 classroom teachers, 17 special teachers, and 6½ aides.  Epperly Heights is located in Del City, Oklahoma which is a suburb of Oklahoma City. Epperly Heights’ student population consists of 89% on free and reduced meals, and the student diversity is 57% Caucasian, 31% black, and 11% American Indian/Alaskan.

Even though our school is in a low socioeconomic area, there is strong parental support that includes an active PTA. Parents volunteer for back-to-school activities, breakfast duty, book fairs, test monitoring, student store and distribute snacks on snack day. Parents also support student programs that include grade level plays and performances, and advanced learning programs. The parents at Epperly Heights help organize and distribute food baskets for the holidays, and participate in the district clothing room and the Mid-Del district PTA.

Epperly Heights Elementary is a large elementary school and they have a low to non-existent library budget. They could greatly use the assistance of PBS and the impact would be positive not only by providing books for the kids but in letting them know that people outside of their community care about them and their education.

We would appreciate any donations for our school and students. Thank you for your consideration and nomination.

Sincerely,

Rhonda Hymel, M. Ed.
Epperly  Heights, Library Media Specialist

When the young people of Mid-Del enter our halls, they will be safe.

When they enter our classrooms, they will be challenged.

When they leave our schools, they will be ready.
