From Dreams to Space Stations: My Journey into Writing Sci-Fi Books

Recently a reader asked me:

How did you get into writing sci-fi?

Here’s my reply:

My journey into writing sci-fi books began with a lifelong love of the genre. As a young reader, I was captivated by classics by Arthur C. Clarke and Issac Asimov’s short story collections and Foundations series, which opened my mind to endless possibilities.

These sci-fi books showed me how stories could explore not just outer space, but also the depths of human experience through the lens of future technologies and alien worlds.

While dreams of space stations and interstellar adventures initially sparked my imagination, it was my deep connection to sci-fi books and radio dramas and TV shows and movies that truly shaped my writing path.

The radio plays like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe.

TV series like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, and Firefly. Other TV shows that shaped my imagination include Babylon 5, Stargate, and Doctor Who.

Movies like Star Wars and Fifth Element.

One particularly vivid dream (real dream while I was sleeping) of a bustling bar on a space station became the foundation for my sci-fi mystery series, the Janey McCallister Mystery series, where readers experience a unique blend of living on a hotel-casino space station and intricate mystery-solving.

What sets my sci-fi books apart is their focus on blending science with human experience.

In my Janey McCallister sci-fi mystery series, readers discover how future technologies impact everyday life, from artificial gravity systems to advanced forensics, all while following characters who grapple with universal human challenges.

The sci-fi books I write aim to challenge current societal norms while maintaining scientific plausibility.

Drawing from my background in fantasy writing, I create detailed worlds that feel both foreign and familiar.

Whether it’s a space station’s bustling marketplace or a colony on a distant moon, each setting serves as a backdrop for exploring deeper themes about humanity’s future among the stars.

For readers looking to explore my sci-fi books, my Janey McCallister mystery series invites you an adventure that combines the wonder of space with the thrill of solving complex mysteries.
