Excerpt of Diamond Heiress

Nick and Brielle arrived at the Diamond Ball, held in the ballroom of Wakefield Castle, fashionably late. When their driver pulled up the winding driveway, a long line of limousines with passengers waiting to exit blocked the way. As each limo stopped at the red carpet, its glittering occupants alighted, assisted by a footman. Paparazzi lined the entrance, hoping to get a picture of some celebrity or of royalty. Tonight’s ball was a mixture of both. Nick and Brielle enjoyed champagne in the limousine while they waited their turn. Outwardly, she appeared very composed, but he sensed her unease. “You look beautiful tonight,” he said. “You also look nervous. Is there a reason?” She was accustomed to attending this type of function.

“I’m not nervous, just excited.” Her smile looked forced.

Nick raised a brow. He knew her well enough to realize there was something she wasn’t telling him.

Finally, their limousine pulled up to the front of the castle. A footman opened the door, and the moment Nick stepped out, cameras started flashing. He reached in for Brielle’s hand and helped her out. Cameras continued flashing until they reached the entrance. Once inside, Nick helped Brielle remove her shimmering white satin cape. She looked absolutely breathtaking in an ice blue silk gown that began as a halter top. The back plunged to her waist and ended in a swirl at her feet, fitting nicely to all her curves on the way down. On her neck, she wore an incredible twenty-five carat diamond necklace with a ten-carat diamond at the center. The long matching earrings caught the light as she moved. Diamonds encircled her wrist. Her large mahogany curls were held up by a string of diamonds twisted through them, a few curling tendrils falling at her nape and cheeks, softening her face. She was stunning, and Nick was rendered speechless by the sight of her. She looked like an angel.

Brielle nudged his arm. “Is something wrong?”

He wanted to sweep her into his arms and kiss her senseless, but couldn’t, because he’d rumple her gown and people entered behind them to check their coats. Instead, he held out his arm. “Shall we head into the ballroom, my kitten?”

They reached the landing of the large marble staircase leading into the ballroom. The sight below was magnificent. There were easily six hundred people already in attendance, men in tuxedos and women dripping with jewels wearing splendid gowns. Several large crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling. Full-length marble pillars designated the dance floor, where magnificent-looking couples waltzed. Waiters moved among the guests with trays of champagne and hors d’oeuvres. People laughed and talked, enjoying themselves. The sight was awe-inspiring.

Nick and Brielle descended the staircase, arm in arm. Across the room, a man couldn’t manage to tear his eyes off them, or rather, Brielle. Nick recognized him as Christophe Beauvais, a notorious playboy who also happened to be the son of Jean Luc Beauvais, founder of Beauvais Jewels, Santorini’s French rival. Christophe did not let his eyes wander from Brielle as they walked down the stairs.

Christophe raised his glass to Brielle in a silent toast. Brielle looked away quickly, but her step faltered, and he tightened his grip to keep her from falling.

  1. Beautiful… I can totally see the scene in my mind. I particularly noted your heroine is named “Brielle”… I have a daughter named “Arielle” and your description of “Brielle” seems spot on to what I think she will look like as an adult (based on how she looks at age 9). Really resonated with me….

    1. Hi Elizabeth. The name Arielle is also very pretty, perhaps one day it will end up in one of my books. I’m so glad you can see the scene in your mind, that is the highest praise an author can receive.
